An Australian Apprenticeship, commonly known as an apprenticeship or traineeship, is a learning pathway that combines paid on-the-job training and formal study with a Registered Training Organisation. It’s a great way to gain a nationally recognised qualification while earning a wage working in under an employment, rather than have to choose one over the other!
As an apprentices or trainee you will finish your higher-learning journey equipped with practical skills AND a formal education. This powerful combination of theoretical and hands-on experience is prized by employers across many industries and professions. Did you know the Australian Government may even provide you with funding and other benefits to assist with the costs incurred whilst you are undertaking your training?
There are more than 500 occupations that offer apprenticeship and traineeship pathways, ranging from Certificate II to Advanced Diploma levels, including traditional trades and a number of emerging occupations in most other sectors of business and industry.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are more than just part-time jobs – they’re a great way to set yourself up for the career you want whilst you are completing your HSC.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW. They allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school.
A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship combines paid work, training and school; and as well as an industry recognised national qualification you will gain credit towards the HSC.
Some apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR.
Group Training is an employment and training arrangement whereby an organisation employs apprentices and trainees under an Apprenticeship/Traineeship Training Contract and places them with host employers. A Group Training Organisation (GTO) undertakes the employer responsibilities for the quality and continuity of the apprentices’ and trainees’ employment and training. The GTO also manages the additional care and support necessary to achieve the successful completion of the training contract.Apprentices and trainees employed by GTOs may spend their entire apprenticeship or traineeship with one host employer who can offer them a well-rounded training experience. Alternatively, they may be rotated around a number of host employers who can each offer a specialised area of training.
Employers who may not otherwise have been able to employ an apprentice or trainee have an opportunity to participate in the training system by hosting an apprentice or trainee for a nominated period of time.
GTOs are collectively the largest employer of apprentices and trainees in Australia. They provide a service that is well-recognised and understood within the community, and the group training name is associated with quality services. Corporations that are recognised as GTOs will have met both state and national requirements.
